What Is a Marks Percentage Calculator?
A marks percentage calculator turns your obtained marks and total marks into a percentage in one tap. Students use it after a class test, a board result, a semester or a mock exam. Parents use it to check a report card, and teachers use it to prepare result sheets faster.
Instead of dividing and multiplying on paper, you type two numbers and get the answer, the grade and a pass or fail result. It also adds up many subjects into one overall percentage, which is what most universities and admission forms ask for.
Marks Percentage Formula
The formula is short and easy to remember:
Percentage = (Obtained Marks ÷ Total Marks) × 100
Divide the marks you got by the marks the paper was worth, then multiply by 100. For example, if you scored 432 out of 500, then 432 ÷ 500 = 0.864, and 0.864 × 100 = 86.4%.
When you have many subjects, do not average the separate percentages. Add all the obtained marks, add all the total marks, and then use the same formula. This matters when subjects have different total marks, because a 50-mark quiz should not count the same as a 100-mark paper.
How to Calculate Marks Percentage Step by Step
- Write down the marks you obtained in each subject.
- Write down the total marks of each subject.
- Add the obtained marks together, then add the total marks together.
- Divide the obtained sum by the total sum and multiply by 100.
Here is a real example. Say you have English 78/100, Maths 85/100, Physics 62/75, Chemistry 70/75 and Urdu 88/100. Your obtained marks add up to 383 and the total marks add up to 450. So 383 ÷ 450 × 100 = 85.11%.
If you had averaged the five separate percentages instead, you would get 85.4%. That looks close, but it is wrong, and on a merit list a small gap like this can change your position. Always use the sum method, and this calculator does exactly that.
How to Use This Marks Percentage Calculator
You do not need an app or an account. It works in Chrome or Safari on Android, iPhone and laptop.
- Enter your marks. Type the obtained marks and the total marks in the first row. The total is already set to 100, so change it if your paper was different.
- Add more subjects if you need to. Tap “Add subject” for each extra paper. Use the ✕ button to remove a row.
- Tap Calculate Percentage. You get your percentage, the working of the formula, your grade and a pass or fail result. Use “Copy result” to share it.
The calculator warns you if the obtained marks are higher than the total, which is the most common typing mistake.
